Mobile 4's demise
Saturday, July 27th, 2002.
Mobile 4 has been forcibly retired. There was an
"incident" this afternoon as I was trying to leave Atlanta for my
vacation trip and meet up with the family in Destin, Florida. About 15-20 miles
south of Atlanta Hartsfield, on I-85, I entered into a very nasty cell of bad
weather. It was a typical bad afternoon shower, and it was raining down harder
than it was draining off the interstate. I was in the fast lane, making so-so
progress up to this point, but it was coming down heavy and I didn't like the
way things felt, so I moved over one lane and tried to slow up some, but I
didn't want to slow up so fast that I caused an accident from the rear, so it
was a game of not going so fast to get out of control, and not going too slow to
cause a car to hit you from behind. Well? I lost the game. With no warning, the
back end of my car easily swayed off to the right. I let up on the gas, and
looked for a way to steer out of it, but it was very clear that I had no
control. In no time, the rear end picked up speed and swung around
counter-clockwise and began a 360? turn. I ended up slamming, driver's side
first, into the cement median wall where my car finally came to rest. I pulled
my car up very slightly to make sure it was not sitting cockeyed, and got out to
survey the damage. To me, it was horrifying, but I was about to soon find out
how little damage was actually done to the car. I got back in the car and dialed
911, and as I listened to the phone ring, and waited for an answer, without
warning, not more than 2 minutes after my car came to rest? a car struck me
dead-on from behind. The force of the impact sent me flailing (unlike before, I
was seat-belt-less at this point in time) and shattered the rear window and
driver's side window, and even buckled the body of the car. I looked back into
my backseat to see the other person's car where my trunk used to be. I climbed
out the driver's side window and saw how bad things were. Luckily, the other
person's car's airbags deployed, and no one in the car seemed to be hurt too
bad. I was numb more than anything, but I was okay, aside from some bruises and
scrapes and sore muscles. I called several friends, but nobody was answering.
Luckily my brother Matt finally answered the call, and came down and helped me
unload and haul back my luggage and misc trip crap. The car was totaled, and I
had to abort my vacation trip, at least for right now. Now, it's time to
regroup, say thanks to some karma (seeing as how I'm not dead and all), and move
on with life, and start looking for Mobile 5.
